Finding foot wear for G has always been a challenge. He’s been wearing braces (called AFOs) since he was an infant. For the first year of his life, he never even wore shoes! As he learned to stand and later walk, we had the difficult task of finding foot wear that would go over his AFOs. Generally, it is difficult to find sneakers for toddlers that come in wide or extra wide sizes. We found some luck with New Balance sneakers as they offer wide sizes for even the littlest feet, but they can be a bit pricey. At times, I’ve resorted to buying sneakers that are a size or two larger, in order to accommodate the AFOs. The other day I got lucky and found a pair of sneakers donned with images of Cars from the Disney movie (A favorite for G) and they were wide enough to comfortably fit over the AFOs. They even light up each time G takes a step. G loved the sneakers but wasn’t so thrilled with how they felt when he put them on. Perhaps they are a bit heavier than what he’s used to. He started to give me a hard time about keeping them on and began requesting his old sneakers (which were worn away and were developing a hole). However, when he noticed that the sneakers light up each time he took a step, he was hooked. He began stomping all around just to see the lights. It was great! Here is my little man, stomping away to get his sneakers to light up, all the while building up the necessary muscles and skills to learn to some day learn to walk on his own!
