When G was first born, we had no idea what his future would be like. His lower extremities developed in a way that seemed impossible for walking in the future. His condition stumped quite a few doctors, who often did not have such a positive outlook on his future with regards to his ability to walk. My son has beaten quite a few odds in the 4 years he’s been on this earth. He started to walk with a posterior walker and is now learning to walk with canes. We have the hopes and dreams that he will walk independently some day. Today, he took one step towards that goal (pun intended). While at my mother’s house, standing upright with his canes, he just let go. He let go of his canes, which he relies heavily on for stability, and just stood there for a couple of seconds. I almost didn’t notice! I looked up at him and caught him standing there with no hands. I couldn’t believe it! He did it a few more times afterwards with such excitement and self discovery. I couldn’t be prouder! I want everyone to see it and understand the depth of this milestone for him, for me and our family. All I need now is to catch this moment on camera!
