Christmas Tree to Mulch
Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post.
Saying goodbye to the holidays is always bittersweet and by the time we get rid of our Christmas tree all traces of the holiday season are gone for about eleven months. Real Christmas trees are a tradition I grew up with while living in the Bahamas, our family would make a day of picking out the perfect tree, taking it home, setting it up and decorating it together. As a young adult with a small NYC apartment, I still wanted to be festive and get into the holiday spirit with a tree but didn’t want to go through all the trouble of getting a real one, so I bought myself a plastic one. After getting married and having our first child, my husband insisted that we get a real tree and he would solely be responsible for caring & disposing of the tree. We purchased our first real Christmas tree as a family a few years ago and there is no going back.
When it is time to dispose of the tree, I didn’t just want to place it in a plastic bag on the curb….that just seemed to wrong . I started researching what you could do with a real tree and came across MulchFest, where you could bring your tree and watch it be turned into mulch to be used for the city parks, gardens, street trees or you could even take home a bag or two If you wanted. Last year we took our tree to Mulchfest and the boys watched as our tree was put into the Chipper and of course they wanted to bring a bag of mulch home; we made amazing smelling sachets from old socks to place around the house.
This year’s Mulchfest Chipping Location dates are January 9 & January 10th from 10am-2pm. You can find a Chipping Location here. Or you can drop your tree off at a Drop-off location starting January 2nd through January 10th to be recycled later.
