Petes Dragon

The original Pete’s Dragon has to be one of my top three favorite movies when I was a kid. I remember watching the VHS over and over and over again with my little sister. This was the first movie we had ever seen that combined live action with animation and we thought it was simply magical! I recall creating my own version of Eliot, an imaginary dragon, who I could blame for mishaps and talk to when I was lonely. When it was announced that there would be a remake of Pete’s Dragon, I was totally EXCITED and couldn’t wait to check it out!
I had the chance to attend a screening of Pete’s Dragon at the Regal L.A. LIVE theater on my recent trip to Los Angeles. The movie started off completely different from the original and I have to admit that I was taken aback because I thought it was going to be a remake.
Even though the new movie had a totally different storyline and the only thing it shared with the original was the combination of live action and animation, it was a great family movie. Pete & Elliot have a bond and friendship that is magical yet based on fundamentals: affection, compassion, companionship and trust. They show a town, the townspeople and especially the grown-ups the importance of taking the time to really look and enjoy everything around you.
Pete’s Dragon is a type of modern fairy tale that illustrates that things are not always what they seem and friendship comes in all shapes and sizes! I can’t wait to take my boys to see the movie and I will definitely invest in buying a copy of the original to add to their movie library.
