Family Volunteer Day
Disclaimer: This post is part of a sponsored campaign for Family Volunteer Day. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.
Family Volunteer Day is held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is a day of service that demonstrates and celebrates the power of families who volunteer together to support their neighbors and neighborhoods. On Saturday, November 19th we will be celebrating the 26th year of Family Volunteer Day which is powered by generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service, and sponsored by The Walt Disney Company.
To celebrate Family Volunteer Day, you can find ways to participate by checking the Family Volunteer Day website for DIY projects that your family can complete or the generationOn website for family volunteer opportunities in your area! There are various DIY projects for different causes : create cheery cards for Military and Veterans, make friendship kits to give to people living in shelters or organize a Food Drive for people struggling with hunger! Just to name a few. Volunteering and giving back is a great way to get little ones involved. Even though my boys are too young to participate in many volunteer opportunities, they can still make a difference by participating in the DIY projects. We decided to make Upcycled Piggy Banks using materials in our house to help the environment and raise money for a cause.
We gathered the materials we needed: 2 empty bottles, pink duct tape, adhesive foam heart stickers, pink pipe cleaners, marker and a scissors.
Next, we covered the water bottles with strips of the pink duct tape to make the body of our piggy bank.
After covering the whole bottle with the pink duct tape, we attached 4 of the adhesive foam heart stickers as the feet and 2 of the adhesive foam heart stickers to the cap as the piggy banks ears. Then, we wrapped the pipe cleaner around the marker to create a curly tail.
Finally we used the scissors to make a hole in the bottom of the bottle and inserted the pipe cleaner tail and cut a slit on the top of the bottle where we could put the money we collect. We used the marker to add a little piggy face to the cap! The boys have placed their piggy banks where everyone can see them and ask friends and family to donate any loose change they may have to help them raise money for their causes.
I hope you and your family will join in and celebrate #FamilyVolunteerDay with us!
