Now that the holidays are upon us, everyone is super busy multitasking: cooking, cleaning, hosting, shopping and decorating. And now that the weather is getting colder, we all want to be safe and warm doing all that we have to do! AccuWeather & the FDNY Foundation have teamed up to provide you with fire safety & winter weather safety tips to help your family and friends #BeReady!
The FDNY Fire Zone is a fire safety learning center that even offers groups a realistic simulation of a fire emergency in their learning lab where kids have to stay calm and crawl out of the room that is becoming filled with “smoke”. They are shown various hazards and given simple ways to help avoid them through hands-on exhibits and multimedia presentations.
On November 22, 2016 the FDNY Foundation and AccuWeather celebrated “Be Ready” day to help New Yorkers be prepared and safe during the cold holiday season. Fire Commissioner, Daniel A. Nigro, stated “Fire Safety Education is especially important as the temperature drops, and the efforts of the FDNY Foundation and our great friends at AccuWeather to spread these critical safety messages this winter will surely save lives.” It really is never too early to begin teaching fire safety to little ones.
As a part of the life-saving partnership, AccuWeather donated $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation to support fire and life safety education awareness and outreach initiatives, including the Foundation-funded Fire Zone, the FDNY’s state-of-the-art learning center of teachers, parents and children, located at Rockefeller Center.Barry Lee Myers, Chief Executive Officer of AccuWeather.
We were able to participate in a presentation covering fire safety and winter weather safety tips in the FDNY FireZone’s learning lab. The firefighters stressed the importance of staying calm and knowing your families’ evacuation plan.
5 Fire Safety Tips
1. Discuss your evacuation plan, meeting point and make sure kids know their own address and phone numbers of parents, friends and family.
2. “Get low and go” & “Don’t hide go outside” are two great sayings to teach children to ensure they get out if there is a fire.
3. Try not to walk away from whatever you are cooking on the stove, if you have to be gone for a few seconds: take a spoon or oven mitt to remind you to return to the stove.
4. Do not overcrowd electrical outlets, this is one of the number one causes of fires in the home.
5. Space Heaters should be kept at least 3 feet away from furniture and other household items.
Laura Velasquez, AccuWeather Network Meteorologist, shared some tips about keeping safe and warm during the cold weather and how winter weather can contribute to fire hazards in and around your home.
