I have decided to get moving more and had the opportunity to try an interval training class at one of the three Orangetheory Fitness studios in Brooklyn (Park Slope Studio opens on 1/14/17). I wasn’t sure what to expect and have to admit that I was extremely apprehensive. I arrived at the studio approximately 30 minutes before my scheduled class, as is recommended for first time clients in order to be outfitted for a heart-rate monitor, complete standard wellness forms for fitness, have a tour of the facility and meet my trainer/coach.
The Orangetheory Williamsburg studio was bright and welcoming and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I explained that I did not have a regular workout routine and was pretty much a beginner at everything. I was outfitted with a heart monitor and the safe explained the Orange Effect to me.
Orangetheory Fitness offers 60-minute workout sessions split into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training with heart rate monitors to track intensity and maximize metabolic burn. Increase energy, get visible results and burn more calories, even after leaving the studio. That’s the Orange Effect!
I was intrigued by the use of heart monitors and the staff explained that the heart-rate monitored training is designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy for a 5 zone heart-rate interval training experience.
The Orangetheory Fitness studio was fully equipped with top-of-the-line equipment: treadmills, rowing machines, suspension unit systems and lots of free weights and benches to accommodate 10 to 25 people. There are also separate men’s and women’s restrooms and showers for comfort and convenience. The upbeat music along with the motivational trainers make the Orangetheory Fitness environment one of the most energetic fitness environments I have ever been in!
The coach/trainer for our class was Corey, who was firm but funny. He was extreme;y helpful and pushed each of us to test our limits during the class. Working out in a group setting provided accountability and some structure to help everyone achieve their fitness goals. I was motivated to keep goingby looking around at my classmates, even though I truly wanted to give up several times during the class.
Our class was focused on strength, so we completed intervals of training on the treadmill, rowing machines and several reps of free weights focusing on various body parts. This was my first time on rowing machines and using free weights but Corey, took his time and showed me the correct form and continuously encouraged me to keep going. I am pretty proud that I completed the workout with good numbers for a newbie AND I burned 578 calories which is within the500 to 1000 estimated calories burned per workout! I really felt the Orange Effect even days after my class and would definitely try to incorporate an Orangetheory class or two in my brand new workout routine.
