Broadway shows are a treat for me and introducing my boys to the magic of Broadway early has been one of my parenting goals. My boys, ages 2, 5 & 7 years old love and appreciate music and are musicians in training, playing a couple instruments. So, musicals are a great fit for them and I was excited to add the School of Rock on Broadway show to the growing list of Broadway shows that they have experienced!

School Rock is full of little musicians (actually playing their instruments) rocking out with their “teacher”, Dewey (Merritt David Janes)! The story unfolds to remind us that everyone, regardless of age should be given respect and listened to, especially by those closest to them, their families illustrated in the song “If Only You Would Listen”. The themes of encouragement, teamwork, self-worth and self-confidenc are expertly woven into the plot and the audiences is drawn into the plot, eagerly anticipating the next scene.

The students song, “Stick it to the Man” got the whole audience revved up: singing and dancing in our seats! My 7 year old was super attentive and followed the storyline throughout the whole show and was really interested in learning more about the actors/actresss who were only a little older that he is.
Based on the hit film, School of Rock – The Musical is a hilarious new musical that follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within.
After the show we had the opportunity to chat with some of the amazing talented child actors and a couple of the adults too! We even got an autograph and picture with the actor who plays Dewey (Merritt David Janes)! School of Rock is a FUN show for the whole family!
