FACT: 10 people drown everyday in America: approximately 25% of which are children and drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional death for children under the age of 14 years old!
FACT: Learning how to swim saves lives and reduces the risk of drowning by 88%!
FACT: African-American children drown at a rate approximately 5.5 times higher than their Caucasian peers, the CDC reports!
I believe swimming is a life skill that all children should learn because they all come in contact with water at some point in their lives. I learned to swim at a very young age most likely because my father was a professional diver and he felt it was important for my siblings and I to learn water safety as well as learning how to swim. Now, as an adult, I still enjoy swimming for leisure as well as exercise.
I have adopted my fathers attitude towards swimming and have introduced all my children to the water as infants, as young as 5 months old, in order to get them comfortable and learn vital life saving water safety skills.
The 6th annual National Learn to Swim Day will be celebrated nationwide on Saturday, May 20th but we had the chance to celebrate a few days early with three time Olympian Swim re and USA Swimming Foundation ambassador: Elizabeth Beisl , SwimWays, USA Swimming Foundation and Imagine Swimming for an afternoon of private swim lessons & water safety chats.
