The Winnie the Pooh stories by A.A. Milne is a childhood favorite of mine as well as countless other people. I always believed that these stories were developed in the author’s mind and transcribed into the delightful series of stories I have always enjoyed. The movie Goodbye Christopher Robin, in select NYC theaters on 10/13, gives us a glimpse into the childhood of the real Christopher Robin, Milne’s own son whose imagination was what actually sparked the seas to create the magical world of Pooh and friends.
The movie shows the often strained and complicated relationship between A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), his wife, Daphne, (Margot Robbie), their son Christopher Robin (Will Tilston) and his beloved nanny, Olive, (Kelly MacDonald).
I really enjoyed the movie and appreciate getting a clearer picture as to how the concept of Winnie-the-Pooh came about as well as why it was so quickly successful in England and around the world. This is a story about depression, family and difficult choices made by all involved. After previewing the film, I now have a better understanding of Christopher Robin and his need to escape and enjoy his magical world.
