My family is not as active as I would like us to be, we have been mostly focused on education and the arts. As a child, I was very athletic and spent lots of time outdoors running, swimming and biking. I have always wanted my children to spend more time outdoors enjoying nature, exercising and staying fit. Living in the city can be a bit challenging for us to get out and active together. So, when we were invited to check out a Rising New York Road Runners Family Running Class at the NYRR Run Center, I jumped at the opportunity. New York Road Runners, has been offering free youth running and fitness programs to young runners across the country to help and inspire people of all ages through running.
New York Road Runners’ mission to help and inspire people through running has been brought to life in a new community running center. The NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the NB Run Hub serves as the new location for race number pickup, conveniently located at 320 West 57th Street in Manhattan, southwest of Columbus Circle. In addition to serving as the spot for number pickup, the NYRR RUNCENTER showcases the latest in running education, training, and innovation. It serves as a meeting place for all members of the running community—youth, adult runners of all ages and abilities, and club teams—to come together to improve their health, fitness, and overall well-being. The NYRR Family Running Class is a one-hour coach led session for families and young runners. First, the participants are led through some warm-ups and exercise in the RUN CENTER that assist with learning and maintaining proper running form. High-knees and Running Tall was a big hit with my boys.
Next, the class moves outdoors with coaches (weather permitting) to nearby Central Park which is about an eight minute walk from the Run Center.
The participants are led through some fun drills like Ladder Jumps, Animal Tag, Bang the Drums and Relay Races as well as a couple strength exercises. My boys loved getting outside and running around, they participated and learned some new activities and games that will help them stay healthy.

1 for You 1 for Youth was launched in January 2017, 1 for You 1 for Youth is a joint initiative by NYRR and New Balance to provide young runners with new high-quality running shoes. The program’s launch coincided with the opening of the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the New Balance Run Hub, a community running center located in Manhattan near Central Park. For each pair of shoes purchased at the New Balance Run Hub, New Balance will donate a pair of running shoes to NYRR’s youth programs. In turn, New York Road Runners distributes the running shoes to participants in their free youth running programs. We have taken the first step to becoming a more active family and I plan on getting outside to run and exercise more as a family!
