We have been working on letter and word recognition with my preschooler and he often gets tired of completing worksheets. So, I decided to integrate some hands-on-learning activities to help him learn and master this skill. For this activity, we used our Learning Resources Letter Blocks (36 colorful hard plastic letter blocks) and our Playskool First Words Flashcards.
First, I separated the flashcards into sets of 3, 4, 5 & 6 letter words that did not have repeating letters. For example: key, hat, fish, cake, heart, juice, orange, pencil.
Next, we reviewed the 3 letter words, saying them out loud before we turned them face down and mixed them up. I let him flip over one card that he would find the letter blocks that made up that word before moving on to the next card. (*the letter blocks feature capital letters and the flash card words are in lowercase letters, so the chid will also be challenged to identify the matching letters)
Then, we reviewed the 4 letter words, saying them out loud before turning them face down and mixing them up. He chose a card and spelled out each word with the letter blocks.
We went on to review the 5 letter words before spelling them out using the letter blocks.
Lastly, we reviewed the 6 letter words and spelled them out using the letter blocks.
This activity assists with both letter and word recognition, memorization, spelling and fine motor skills.
