When visiting another country I enjoy learning more about the area by visiting local museums, cultural institutions and landmarks. So, during our couples trip to Guadalajara, Mexico we decided to take a GDL bus tour to visit Los Guachimontines (an archeological site) located in Jalisco, which is about an hour away from Guadalajara. On the bus and walking tour, the guide spoke both Spanish and English because my Spanish is extremely limited.
We arrived at Teuchitlán and stopped at the convenient store where it was suggested you purchase some cold water and use the restrooms if needed after the hour drive.
Los Guachimontones, the circular step pyramids, were unearthed in 1969 by the American archaeologist Dr. Phil Weigand who began excavation in 1996.
The Guachimontones Museum takes visitors on a trip through time to get a better understanding of the Teuchitlán culture including their daily life, some ceremonies and leisure activities.
After exploring the museum, you can walk around the three amazing circular structures as well as the MesoAmerican ball courts that had once been used for games.
Although you are not able to climb all of the structures, there is one that visitors are allowed to climb and the view from the top is breathtaking and definitely great for a photo or two!
A trip to visit Los Guachimontones, learn more about the history & culture and climb one of the only circular pyramids in the world is a MUST if you are in the area. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and stay hydrated!
