Homeschooling is quite an undertaking and I often look for any assistance I can get to make certain my children are on task with their grade level peers who attend traditional school. We decided to take the boys in to our local Huntington Center in Park Slope in Brooklyn, NY to have them assessed to see where they scored in relation to other students in their current grades. The initial parent intake form and interview is quite lengthy, requiring student interests, statistics as well as a parents’ opinions regarding their child’s attitude, work ethic and interests. This in depth assessment really allows the center to create a well-rounded analysis of each student. We arrived at the center and were greeted by the office staff who gave us the paperwork to complete and gave the boys an activity to keep them occupied until the teachers who would asses them were ready to begin their assessments. Once the teachers were ready, they introduced themselves to the boys and took each one to a separate area to begin testing after showing me where they would be. The boys happily left with their respective teacher leaving my husband and I to complete the intake paperwork. We had been advised to bring snacks and drinks by the center director because the process could be long and students are given several breaks. My youngest son took quite a few breaks which is understandable and expected of an active four year old.
My boys are 4 years old (Pre-K), 7 years old (2ndgrade) and 9 years old (4thgrade). Since, I am their main teacher of all subjects, I have a pretty good idea of their strengths, weaknesses and what they are working on regarding their academic work and was interested to see if I was on target with each child.
The individual comprehensive Huntington academic evaluation lasted a couple hours including some much needed breaks: covering Reading, Phonics, Writing, Math and reveals the skill level each student is currently operating on as well as their unique learning styles. We were given the option to leave the facility while the boys tested and were called to pick them up when they were done. The boys did not seem stressed or overwhelmed by the testing, they were just as happy as they had been before the assessments. The detailed results are available to review with a center educational director usually in a couple of days after the assessment takes place.
Huntington Learning Centers provide educational supplemental services including individualized tutoring service and test prep for elementary and secondary students nationwide. My boys each had an in depth assessment at our local Huntington Center in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY and we scheduled a date to review the results with an educational director of the center. Reviewing the results was extensive and took about an hour per child. It is encouraged that both parents attend the briefing and childcare will be provided if you need to bring the children back at this time.
My 4 year old (Pre-K) was assessed using the Slosson Visual Motor Performance Tase (S-VMPT), WOLD Sentence Copying Test, BOEHM Test of Basic Concepts, Reading Readiness (letter recognition, letter formation), Rosner Test of Auditory Perception, CHALL Phonetic Analysis, IOTA Sight Word Test, Slosson Oral Reading Test (SORT-R), Informal Reading Inventory (IRI), an Achievement Test, Writing Sample and a Huntington Math Placement exam. We reviewed his scores in each test and subject area which revealed that he mastered auditory perception and phonics skills above his grade level but still needs to work on letter recognition, sight words, reading, comprehension and basic math skills.
My 7 year old (2nd grade) was assessed using the same assessment tools with the expectation that he would complete more of it at or above his grade level. After reviewing his scores we saw that he has a mastery of foundational sounds and his sight word reading level is way above grade level. He can read passages fluently but needs to work on overall reading comprehension. His spatial relationships in regards to writing words and Math skills are areas that need improvement.
My 9 year old (4th grade) completed the assessments as well as an additional writing sample. The review of his scores highlighted that his sight word reading level is above his current grade level and he needs to work on his reading fluency and comprehension as well as writing expressively and Math skills.
Huntington created a detailed individualized program for each child which broke down the areas they needed to improve into hours of instruction. I really appreciated the in-depth assessment and I was able ti use the results to target the skills each child needed, making their curriculum more personalized. There are options for one-on-one instruction or small group instruction which allows every student the opportunity to address and master the areas the need to improve. Huntington Learning Center provides a well-rounded look at where your child is currently performing, the skills they are proficient in as well as the ones they need some extra assistance with.
