Reinforcing letter sounds at home for my pre-reader is essential in helping him on his reading journey. Finding ways to actively engage him while focusing on these important skills often leads to us creating activities together. My 5 year old is definitely a kinesthetic learner, loves moving around and loves hands-on activities. I came up with a game for him to practice letter sounds using a book fro the All Around Bustletown board book series and foam letter shapes.
These oversized board books are packed with bright very detailed illustrations that tell the stories of characters living in a bustling town. The All Around Bustletown: Spring by Rotraut Susanne Berner was his choice from the series in celebration of Spring.
We gathered our bag of foam letters and he chose the four letters we would be working on for this activity: “B”, “R”, “C” and “P”. Then, he found all the matching letters from the bag and sorted them into four piles.
First, I found four items on he pages of the book and labeled them with the correct letter: “B for bird”, ” P for “puppy”, “R for rabbit” & “C for car”. Then it was his turn to place letters on a s many pictures that the could find of words that began with each letter. After he was done, we went over what pictures he found and verified that they started with those letters.
This activity could be used with using different letters, focusing on ending sounds or even spelling out the words to the pictures they choose.
