The book, It’s A Great Big Colorful World by: Tom Schamp is packed with brightly colored illustrations that are sure to brighten up any day! This book is great for practicing color recognition and identification of a number of shades of each color. Friends, Otto and Leon are found throughout the pages as we follow along on their colorful adventure and will inspire lots of rainbow art projects.
After looking through this book, we were inspired to create our very own colorful nature rainbows using items in nature and around our house. Rainbow art for toddlers and older children is really simple to create!
Materials:
- It’s a Great Big Colorful World book
- empty cereal box
- clear packing tape
- scissors
- colorful objects (leaves, flowers, fabric scraps, buttons, paper)
We decided to take our book outside to read and search for colorful objects for our Nature Rainbow craft.
In the backyard, we found a number of leaves and flowers for different colors of our rainbow.
We used one of our toddler divided plates the boys outgrew to collect and sort our items.
After collecting items found in nature, we noticed that we did not have some of the colors needed for our ROYGBIV rainbow. We looked around and found some scraps of fabric, buttons and bits of paper to add to our collection.
Next, we cut the front of an empty cereal box out and cut a “window” i the middle of it.
Then we turned carefully added strips of tape to the window” of the cereal box, then flipped it over to begin our rainbow on the sticky side.
Following the pattern of a rainbow, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo & Violet, we began to add our colorful collection to the sticky side of the tape.
After adding all of our items, we placed strips of tape over them to seal our rainbow suncatcher craft.
