Halloween fun includes costumes, spooky decor and of course great stories! The newest Nina Soni book, Halloween Queen is a great read. This story written by Kashmira Sheth, tells the story of a fun and distractible Indian-American girl, her family and friends as they get ready for Halloween!
Nina Soni Halloween Queen by Kashmira Sheth
Halloween brings out Nina Soni’s competitive spirit. Her friend Jay has a great costume planned, so–of course–Nina has to come up with an even better idea. A bunch of old boxes in the basement inspires her to create an impressively scary haunted house, for which she can charge admission. So what could possibly go wrong for the Halloween Queen?
This book was a great read aloud for my 3rd & 4th graders leading up to Halloween. I loved that they were able to learn more about Nina and her culture through the story. They made text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections to the characters and their lives.
I created a worksheet for the students to brainstorm and share the connections the made to the book.
After reading the book, my students were filled with some new facts about Indian culture, had many questions about Diwali and wanted to get creative to decorate the classroom for Halloween! We even decided to create our very own Halloween tunnel filled with spooky art, creepy paper spiders, ghosts and pumpkins as well as one-of-a-kind creations! For this project we used:
- posteboard
- chart paper
- construction paper
- scissors
- markers
- glue
- water colors
Nina Soni: Halloween Queen is a great read for learners ages 7-10, grades 2-4. The book has 168 pages and a Lexile level of 550L.
