In honor of the upcoming holiday, Juneteenth, we decided to make some apparel using the Cricut Machines! We made a matching hat and shirt for this project with a tri-colored fist using Pan African colors: black represents the people, green represents the richness of the land, red represents the blood that unites all people of African ancestry as well as the bloodshed during the fight for freedom, and yellow represents the richness of the people. We decided to create these crafts to help introduce and familiarize people with Juneteenth and because we didn’t find many DIY crafts to help us commemorate and celebrate.
Here is some information about Juneteenth: Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the independence of the African Americans from slavery. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th, it was first celebrated on 1865 and has been celebrated ever since. It was made a federal holiday in 2021.
Here’s what you’ll need to make to make it!
- A blank Hat
- A blank T-Shirt
- A Cricut Cutting Machine (We used the Cricut Maker)
- Cricut Heat Press (We used the Easy Press Mini)
- Cricut Hat Press
- Cricut Brightpad
- Red, Green, and Yellow Iron-On Vinyl
First, we used Cricut Design Space to create our design. We made a layered design using red, yellow and green to create a fist. Then we printed out the design using red, yellow and green iron-on vinyl. Since we used the same design for both the shirt and the hat, we simply made a smaller version that would fit the hat perfectly. The image should be
Once all the fists were printed out on the machine mat and carefully weeded using the Cricut BrightPad.
We positioned the design on the blank shirt and used the Cricut Easy Press Mini to attach each layer of the fist design to the shirt. We also added a tai-colored “JUNETEENTH” to the shirt design.
Next, we made a matching hat using the Cricut Hat Press, a blank black hat and the same tri-colored fist we created using the red, green and yellow iron-on vinyl.
The hat Cricut Hat Press is pretty easy to use and can be controlled using a mobile device. We layered the iron-on design and attached it using the hat press.
This Juneteenth inspired matching hat and shirt set is a great way to spark conversation and educate others about this important event in US history.
